Meet the speakers: Adam de Sola Pool


CEO, Environmental Investment Partners

Adam, as a venture capitalist has founded over twenty renewable energy and environmental companies in central Europe. He invested through Environmental Investment Partners which was funded by family and HNW investor money. Adam tries to inculcate a commitment to a triple bottom line (people, planet and profits) into all his energy and environmental infrastructure projects.

Since returning to the USA in late 2013, Adam has been a mentor at TechStars, MIT Venture Mentors and other organizations.  He has helped bring European startups to the Boston area for funding, strategic development and market expansion.  Harry has been a Venture investor with Balderton Capital since 2009 which is one of Europe’s largest VC funds, and an early investor.

Harry started his career at McKinsey & Co. in London and New York, and has a degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of Oxford.

Startup Consultant, Coach and Mentor

Having worked for several tech startups in California and then consulting for a number of years, Sandra Sick relocated to Lisbon 4 years ago. She provides marketing services to various clients and is very involved with the startup community throughout Portugal. As an Entrepreneur in Residence, mentor, coach and instructor, Sandra has been involved with all 4 editions of Lisbon Challenge and enjoys working closely with teams to help strategize and solve their very real marketing and customer acquisition challenges.

CEO & Founder, Mind the Bridge Foundation

Marco Marinucci is an angel investor, startup afecionado and managing partner of Mind the Seed, an early stage venture capital firm. In Silicon Valley since 2002, Responsible for Google’s content acquisition activities from 2005 to 2012. Founder and CEO of the Mind the Bridge (MTB) a San Francisco based foundation, fostering Entrepreneurship education.

He’s also the founder and CEO of the Mind the Bridge Foundation, the non-profit organization that connects the most innovative startups with Silicon Valley’s partners and investors. Marco’s 20+ years professional experience spans from artificial intelligence research to startups in VoIP, Ecommerce, Elearning and Ticketing. He’s a contributor for Il Corriere della Sera (the leading Italian newspaper) and board member and lecturer of IE Business School (a top tier EU business school).

He was awarded Primi-10 2013: “Outstanding human beings that are an example and inspiration for our generation and generations to come.”

Chairman & President, Mind the Bridge Foundation and Startup Europe Partnership

Forward-looking, dividing his time between Italy and the United States, Alberto works on bridging technology to business. Alberto Onetti is a seasoned serial entrepreneur with core competences in corporate strategy and finance. Among the others, he founded, together with Fabrizio Capobianco, Funambol, Inc., a mobile personal cloud company based in Silicon Valley with R&D in Europe.

Alberto is Professor of Business Administration and Entrepreneurship. In 2009 he has been appointed as Chairman of the Californian Mind the Bridge Foundation, its mission is to inspire, educate and stimulate a new generation of young European entrepreneurs and create startups inspired by the methods and successes achieved in the Silicon Valley. Through the seed venture fund Mind the Seed, whose he is Partner, Alberto concretely invests in the best startups to create successful international ventures.

Since 2014 Alberto has been selected by European Commission to help drive the Startup Europe Partnership (SEP), the first integrated platform to support growth and sustainability of European companies.

Head of Innovation, Beta-i

Manuel is a physicist and interested in all the things related to Science and Technology. He holds an Msc in Technological Physics from IST in Lisbon and the University of Utrecht and has lived in 8 different countries. Manuel worked previously at Mercer Human Resources as a consultant, at Danone in Italy where he was Strategic Planner and Brand Manager and at Qbian as European Marekting Manager. Soon after, he co-founded Beta-i and he is currently a PhD candidate at ISCTE on Complex Systems.

Meet the speakers: Nicholas Zylberglajt


Co-Founder and Vice-President, European Young Innovators Forum (EYIF)

Nicholas is the Co-Founder of the European Young Innovators Forum, the leading foundation for Youth Innovation in Europe. He believes Europe has a strong potential in its Youth. What’s is lacking is a clear leadership to actually change things, connect young entrepreneurs and innovators and build a pan-European startup ecosystem where companies will be able to grow and scale. This is what he tries to do with EYIF.

Besides EYIF, Nicholas is currently working on a start-up project and am involved in other initiatives such as the Euromentors Association for Digital Entrepreneurs. In the past, he worked as a French diplomat then as political and digital media advisor at the European Parliament.

Co-founder & CEO, The Faction Collective

Alex’s experience has generated expertise generated in the trenches from entrepreneurship, brand development, operations, marketing, retail and internet from institutional to early stages across the globe. With co-founder Tony McWilliam, Alex is building Faction Skis + Apparel into a disruptive global leader in snowsports and lifestyle. He also likes collaborating with and building communities. Alex co-founded co-working space Runway East. He also chairs a thriving group of active founders and ecosystem supporters driving change in the new industrial revolution called ICE.

Previously Alex was CEO of PE-backed Latitude Digital Marketing, one of Europe’s largest digital marketing firms with thousands of clients in Germany, the UK, the US and the Middle East. Alex drove the turn-around and sale of Latitude before returning to Faction.
Since 2008 Alex is an angel investor in technology and retail-based projects (Skimlinks, Grabble, Conversocial, BraveNewTalent, UserVoice, OrderSwift, RentMineOnline (sold), Brainient, Seedcamp, MyBuilder, Togethera, Woo). In 1999, he co-founded GoIndustry plc which he and the team took it public in London where it was valued at over $100M.
Obtaining his BA from Stanford and MBA from Harvard, ever the entrepreneur, he co-founded the wine club at both. Alex enjoys skiing, kite surfing and running.

Meet the speakers: Ricardo Marvão


Co-Founder, Beta-i

Ricardo Marvão is the Product Deputy at Lisbon Challenge & Co-Founder of Beta-i. Ricardo co-founded and was the CEO of Evolve Space Solutions, one of the first Portuguese startups providing software products and services for the major European space agencies and companies, that was later acquired by Novabase (the biggest Portuguese IT company, in PSI-20 Index). Ricardo was Manager for the Aerospace department at Novabase until early 2013.

Ricardo worked several years for the European Space Agency in Earth Observation & Scientific missions in Germany and later for Inmarsat in London, a major satellite telecommunications company, besides working in Boston with MIT-Portugal. He has an Aerospace MBA from the Toulouse Business School.

CEO, Feedzai

Nuno Sebastião is a co-founder and CEO of Feedzai, a machine learning platform for anti-fraud. Previously, Nuno led the development of the European Space Agency Satellite Simulation Infrastructure, contributing to the history-making Rosetta comet chaser space probe. Today, Nuno and his top team of data scientist and aerospace engineers at Feedzai are keeping commerce safe for the mightiest financial services companies on earth.

Nuno was also the founder and president of Oristeba, a space consulting company and a consultant with Andersen Consulting. He holds a Masters of Computer Science and an MBA from London Business School.

Founder, Future Sailor

Felix Petersen is a serial entrepreneur and investor from Berlin, Germany. He’s founded and sold two companies: Plazes, a pioneering Geo-spacial company (sold to Nokia in 2008) and Amen an opinion sharing app (sold to Tape.tv in 2013). He´s been a motor for the Berlin startup and tech scene since it’s humble beginnings and has been credited widely for helping to put Berlin on the map.

He wrote the first cheque to Soundcloud and continues to be an active angel and advisor to companies like Auxy, Readmill (exited to DropBox), Dataminr and Retention Grid. Petersen has had numerous appearances in publications like Wired, the New York Times and many others as well as being a frequent speaker.

Entrepreneur-in-Residence, 500startups

Tristan is an Entrepreneur in Residence at 500 Startups, the world’s most active micro VC, and empowering the most creative people in the world as co-founder of Storefront. Called ‘Airbnb for Retail’ by The New York Times, Storefront helped open over 1,000 stores in 2014.

His last startup, SocialEarth, the Huffington Post for social entrepreneurship, had over 200 contributors in 25 countries. SocialEarth was acquired by 3BL Media in 2012. Tristan has also been named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2015, and led national marketing campaigns at Best Buy, including crafting the most read email of all time reaching over 23 million customers.

Chairman, Entrepreneurship & Innovation Center, IE Business School

Juan Jose Güemes joined IE Business School in March 2010, as Chairman of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, after seventeen years of intense political activity. He is a former member of the Madrid Assembly from the People’s Party who served as Minister of Health and Minister of Employment and Diversity for the Autonomous Community of Madrid.

He had previously served in a broad range of government departments, including tourism, finance and employment, gender policies, and health. Since January 2.012, he is also IE VP of Economic Affairs.

Tobias is experienced in corporate venture capital, entrepreneurship and financial markets sales. Entrepreneurial driven, team spirited and emphatic, Tobias consider these 3 characteristics to be the ones which helped him to achieve his professional goals.

During his career, Tobias experienced both sides of the table. Initially in the investment banking and media industries, later as entrepreneur and investor. Tobias graduated from the University of Exeter and received an MBA from IE Business School. He is passionate about working with early stage companies from Europe’s most vibrant tech hubs. Tobias has a passion for great food, is a sports enthusiast and lives with his wife and two children in Berlin.

President Beta-i

With an MsC degree in Business and Administration and after working 3 years in the financial sector, Pedro worked as project manager at Chapitô and he then took part in the Social Entrepreneurship Program at INSEAD, to then co-found the Social Innovation Program.

In 2009, and after a post-graduation in “Foresight, Strategy and Innovation”, Pedro became a freelance consultant and project manager in (social) entrepreneurship and innovation. Pedro was also the Head of Design Response at Experimenta Design, between 2010 and 2011, and he’s a Board Member at the Portuguese Business Angels Association since April 2011. In late 2009 he co-founded Beta-i, a non-profit organization based in Portugal, focused in entrepreneurship and innovation.

Beta-i is responsible for Beta-Talks, TEDxEdges, Silicon Valley comes to Lisbon, SandBox Global Summit, Startup Weekend Portugal, Beta-Start, SeedCamp Lisbon, Founders Institute Lisbon and BetaChallenge. Pedro is also a member of the Kauffman Global Partners Network, the Young Urban Network of the Asian Europe Foundation and the Global Entrepreneurship Forum.

Partner, Hoxton Ventures

“Hussein is a founding partner of Hoxton Ventures, a London-based early stage European venture capital firm. He currently represents Hoxton’s investments on the boards of Campanja, Deliveroo and Yieldify. He is also an advisor to the Chairman of Eros International Plc (NYSE:EROS) and a managing director at Siemer & Associates.

He occasionally assists the UK government with technology policy, and has additionally appeared on BBC, Bloomberg, CNN and Sky News. Hussein is an angel investor in Bea’s of Bloomsbury, GoCardless, Halo Neuroscience, Popxo, Shoto, Signpost and Yieldify. He is also an advisor to Tarmin and Wamli. Formerly, Hussein was an associate at Accel Partners, where he focused on consumer internet, financial technology and software investments.

Hussein holds an MBA from London Business School, and did his undergraduate studies in Symbolic Systems at Stanford University.

Casey Armstrong is founder of Full Stack Marketer, a technology-focused marketing firm specializing in customer acquisition and revenue growth for both clients and internal projects. Casey considers himself as a well versed in growth hacking, SEO, content marketing, semantic search, marketplace marketing, email marketing, and software development. Executive Director, Startup Lisboa

João Vasconcelos founded and managed several companies, from design to real estate and tourism. He always had a strong involvement in community and associations, particularly in ANJE where he was Vice President. He supports national entrepreneurship for many years and now adds to his business life the position of Executive Director of Startup Lisboa, Lisbon City incubator, a project founded by the Municipality of Lisboa, Montepio Bank, IAPMEI, and supported by companies like Portugal Telecom, Cisco, Microsoft, SAGE and several universities.

Founder of Superpowered Audio Engine & NYT bestselling author

Patrick Vlaskovits is a NYT bestselling author and founder of Superpowered. His writing has been featured in the Harvard Business Review, the Wall Street Journal, and The Browser.  Patrick speaks at technology conferences nationally and internationally, including SXSW, GROW Conference, The Turing Festival and The Lean Startup Conference. He serves as a mentor for 500 Startups seed fund and startup accelerator.

Stephan Morais is an Executive Director at Caixa Capital, the Private Equity and Venture Capital fund management company of Caixa Geral de Depósitos with 750 Million Euros under management, where he leads Venture Capital and co-leads Private Equity investments.

With a diversified background as an investment banker, consultant, entrepreneur and CEO, he has lived in 8 countries and 4 continents over the last 18 years. He is a non-Executive Director and Advisor to numerous innovative companies and member of Investment Committees of several VC and PE funds. Rodrigo joined Point Nine Capital as an Investment Associate after finishing his MBA at London Business School in 2013. Previously, he was a Summer Associate at Index Ventures in London. Prior to that he worked as a Senior Strategy Consultant at PwC in Madrid.

Exec-in-Residence, Notion Capital

Chrys joined Notion as Exec-in-Residence in 2015 from Accel Partners, where he was a VP on the investment team. Prior to Accel, Chrys was at Amazon Web Services, where he led Business Development efforts of the startup ecosystem, across Europe, Middle East and Africa. Before AWS he was COO of Living PlanIT, a B2B startup technology company enabling the development of intelligent and sustainable urban-scale environments. Chrys worked at Cisco for approximately 10 years, where he led Services-related investments, acquisitions worldwide among other IT tasks.

He has lived and worked in Silicon Valley, UK, Portugal and India and led projects in the Middle East, South Africa, China and Singapore. Chrys holds a BSc in Computer Science from the University of California, San Diego and an MBA from the Judge Business School at Cambridge University.

Angel Investor

Jeremy is an angel investor from Singapore, mostly based in London for the last ten years with a portfolio of 30+ investments in the US, UK, Sweden, Israel, and Singapore. He is mostly interested in big data/predictive analytics, consumer and mobile technologies, and finding a cure for jetlag. Some of his investments include Citymapper, Azimo, Move Guides, Skycatch, and Mapillary.

Prior to being unemployed, Jeremy ran two equity derivatives trading desks at Merrill Lynch, and was shouted at a lot as a Lieutenant in the Singapore Armed Forces (and at the bank too come to think of it). He also has separate degrees in Psychology, Finance, and Financial Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton, and the National University of Singapore.
